CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Fans attending games at Memorial Stadium this season will notice a new security measure as the No. 12 Illinois Fighting Illini celebrate the stadium’s 101st year.

The University of Illinois Division of Public Safety and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) revealed on Monday the installation of walk-through metal detectors at every stadium entrance. This update comes as the stadium gears up for potentially large crowds, following the first season ticket sellout in over two decades.

“Ensuring fan safety is our highest priority,” stated the DIA. “These upgrades, in line with previous seasons’ enhancements like drone detection, on-site meteorologists, and expanded traffic control, reaffirm Illini Athletics and the Division of Public Safety’s dedication to offering the safest gameday experience possible.”

The entry process will be akin to that at many other sporting venues nationwide. Fans will carry their belongings through metal detectors and will be further checked with a handheld wand if an alarm sounds.

“Though effective, the metal detection system may still be set off by certain items like sunglasses cases and stadium seats,” explained the DIA. “To prevent delays, fans should set items such as stadium seats aside as directed by security staff before entering the detector.”

The new screening process is designed to enhance safety without slowing down entry, the DIA added.

The clear bag policy, implemented by Illinois Athletics in 2018, remains in place. Fans will need to go through existing bag check stations before proceeding to the metal detectors.
