An American mom who moved her family to Spain has lifted the lid on the shocking differences between the two countries.

Marae and Roger Torrelier, aged 36 and 40, respectively, originally hail from the United States and have dedicated years to traveling the world as full-time content creators.

Over the course of their travels, they fell in love with the culture and lifestyle in Europe.

While they often contemplated moving abroad, knowing that their relatives were in the US always stopped them from taking the plunge.

However, as their oldest daughter, now five, approached school age, they decided against enrolling her in an American school due to concerns about shootings.

So the couple decided to pack up their belongings and move to Malaga, Spain, with their toddler and 1-year-old baby.

‘I didn’t want to send [my daughter] to school and not have her come back,’ Marae explained during an exclusive chat with the Daily Mail. 

‘I couldn’t shake the thought of her learning gun drills at such a young age.’

Recently, Marae, 36, and Roger, 40, decided to gather up their possessions and move with their two daughters, aged 5 and 1, to Malaga, Spain.

Marae soon discovered that life in Spain was very different than life in America.

She gushed that the people there are much friendlier and ‘look after’ each other, while kids are welcome in all spaces, unlike in the US where there are a lot of rules about where they can hang out.

‘Life in Spain is very different than where we lived in the US, but since it’s all new to us we are mostly excited to learn a new way of life,’ she said. 

‘We love how families are treated and welcomed everywhere here. They just expect you to be with your kids and there’s no warning needed. 

‘I feel like even in more family friendly areas in the US they have great dedicated kids areas, but the kids and the adults are separated. 

‘Here in Spain, you see seniors out and about, playing in parks and socializing with the kids that are throwing the ball around. 

‘Families chasing after their toddler and kids interacting and taking place in all areas of life. 

‘Our kids play in parks or plazas while we eat and everyone looks out for them. It’s just a more community oriented society.’

In addition, she explained that the work-life balance is better, which means they get more quality time with their daughters.

She said they’ve been able to ‘slow down’ since making the move, and ‘concentrate on soaking up the first years of the girls’ lives.’ 

She also revealed that things are ‘way more affordable’ in Spain, and pointed out that so many beautiful destinations in Europe are just a short flight away.

But most importantly, she explained that she doesn’t have to worry as much in Spain as she did in America.

‘I feel like overall my children are safer here and therefore I feel more peace of mind,’ Marae said.

She said they’ve been able to ‘slow down’ since making the move, and ‘concentrate on soaking up the first years of the girls’ lives’

As for the downsides, she explained that it’s slightly harder to get certain products and goods since there are fewer stores and no delivery services like DoorDash.

‘We miss our family and miss some comforts like driving everywhere, and the availability of products… But it’s an easy trade off for the quality of life we have now – with much more peace of mind, and time together.’

In the end, Marae said she hoped that sharing their story will encourage others to do the same.

‘Moving abroad is not a simple or small decision… but if you dream of a slower lifestyle or one where you feel more aligned with where you live, I certainly think it’s worth looking into it,’ she concluded.
