At the 70th Venice Film Festival, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney graced the opening day with radiant smiles as their latest film launched the ten-day celebration.

The duo arrived in Venice a day ahead of schedule to relax prior to the opening night, and the rest clearly paid off as they appeared vibrant on the festival’s first day at the Palazzo del Casino on Wednesday.

An effervescent Sandra, 49, was a vision in a colourful pink, green and red fitted dress which accentuated her slender, tanned physique.

The Virginia-born beauty wore only a pair of tan strappy sandals to accessorise her outfit, and left her tumbling brunette locks loose to frame her face which was delicately touched-up with a pink blush and matching pink lipstick.

Clasping onto the Miss Congeniality star’s waist was Clooney, 52, who looked equally as dapper in a navy blue, pinstripe suit and a white shirt with blue pinstripes.

He teamed the outfit with a pair of sunglasses slotted neatly into his blazer pocket, and kept it simple with a black belt and black shoes.

The actor looked suitably bronzed and refreshed after enjoying a relaxing summer at his home in Lake Como.

The stars’ new American techno-thriller Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, opens the film festival this year despite not being in the running for an award.

Crowds of dedicated fans waited eagerly near the Palazzo del Casino to get their hands on autographs and take pictures with the Hollywood stars.

Bullock and Clooney laughed and relished in the moment together, ahead of their film’s first viewing, which sees the pair as surviving astronauts in a damaged space shuttle.

Clooney, who took a coach from his home in Lake Como along with Sandra and her son Louis, 2, who she adopted back in 2010, visited the sights and sounds of Venice on taxi boats when they arrived the day before the festival.

The pre-opening of the festival took place on Tuesday at the Campo San Polo Arena in Venice featuring the screening of Le mani sulla città (Hands Over the City, 1963) by Francesco Rosi.

Directed by Alberto Barbera, the 70th festival will run from August 28 to September 7.

The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms.

The jury will award prizes for feature-length films, including the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion for Best Director and a new award, the Grand Jury Prize.

A total of twenty films will vie for the coveted Golden Lion at the world’s oldest film festival, and include Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem, starring Christoph Waltz as a reclusive computer genius, and Peter Landesman’s Parkland, which looks into what happened at Dallas’ Parkland hospital the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Director of the festival, Alberto Barbera, said in an interview about the number of bleak films amongst this year’s line-up: ‘Perhaps one of the strongest themes that emerges from all the films is the lack of prospects. There’s an acknowledgment of an extremely problematic situation, in some cases tragic,’ Barbera told a news conference.

‘Cinema mirrors reality, so we can’t complain if auteur films today gives us an image of our times that is not consoling.’
