“Hang on to your vaginas,” says Megan in the trailer of M3GAN 2.0 shown exclusively to CinemaCon attendees during Universal‘s presentation.
Set two years after the little robot lady went on murderous rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of AI. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw) is now 14, a rebellious teenager living under Gemma’s overprotective rules. The trailer begins with M3GAN saying, “I admit there were some bugs in my programming. It’s hardly fair to blame me for that.”
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. For a moment in the trailer, M3GAN is locked in a plastic robo figure. “Put me in a body and let me help her stop you,” M3GAN tells her Gemma.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original AI bitch is about to meet her match. This is no thrifty budget Blumhouse movie, rather two robotic women beating the crap out of each other.
In addition to Williams, McGraw, Donald and Davis, M3GAN 2.0 features returning stars Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, as well as Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp and Jemaine Clement.
Director Gerard Johnstone and writer Akela Cooper reunite after the 2022 film for the James Wan-produced Blumhouse sequel, which also adds Williams as a producer.
.Blumhouse’s slaying doll returns to domestic cinemas on June 27.
