FOUR mistresses testify at murder trial of 'wife poisoner' dentist

A murder trial in Colorado has unveiled the chilling final words reportedly spoken by a mother of six as she lay dying in her hospital bed. These words were recounted by her husband, a dentist, who now faces charges of her murder.

James Craig, aged 47, has entered a not guilty plea in response to accusations of first-degree murder related to the poisoning demise of his wife, Angela, aged 43. Angela was pronounced brain dead on March 15, 2023, after experiencing unexplained symptoms approximately 10 days earlier.

According to prosecutors, Craig allegedly poisoned Angela’s protein shakes by secretly administering lethal amounts of cyanide, arsenic, and tetrahydrozoline, a compound commonly found in eye drops.

They’ve presented evidence indicating Craig administered more poison while she was hospitalized and possibly swapped out capsules for antibiotics he insisted she take.

Craig’s sister-in-law, Renee Pray, told the court on Thursday that Craig had repeatedly checked to ensure she and her husband gave Angela that antibiotic.

He also questioned the need for a urine test after they took her to the hospital when  Angela’s condition rapidly deteriorated after taking the pills, she said.

By the end of that day – March 15 – Angela’s family was told all brain activity had ceased.

The dentist ‘said that her last words were: ‘Why do I hurt?’ testified Pray, who is married to Angela’s brother, Mark. She ‘found it to be impactful’ and wrote it down, she said.

The eighth day of Craig’s trial began with testimony from a fourth mistress of the dentist.

Elizabeth Gore told the Arapahoe County jury that she and Craig flew to Montana from Denver in December 2022, just weeks after they met on ‘sugar dating’ site Seeking.com.

Another ‘sugar baby’ testified the previous day that he’d also taken her to Montana in fall 2022 – after a third testified Craig had bought her daughter a $9,000 car.

Both testified that Craig was unhappy in his marriage but said a divorce would financially ruin him.

When Gore took the stand on Thursday, she told the court how she and the dentist were driving from their Airbnb to the ski lifts on the morning after arriving in Bozeman when he received a call from his wife. Gore waited in the car for up to two hours as he argued with Angela, she said.

Then Craig got back in the vehicle, said they needed to go home, they bought new flights and flew back to Colorado, Gore added.

He’d given her monetary gifts amounting to around $8,000 during their relationship, which began in November or October of 2022, she said.

Gore and Craig continued communicating until March 2023 – the same month Angela would die in the hospital after suffering from a mystery illness.

Prosecutors argue the dentist poisoned his wife with cyanide, arsenic and tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in eyedrops.

He devised the devious plot amidst financial struggles and extramarital romance, prosecutors say – particularly a recently begun relationship with a Texas orthodontist he met at a February 2023 dental conference.

The defense argues that Angela was ‘manipulative’ and suicidal, claiming the orthodontist was just the latest in a long line of women.

Craig, however, is not just charged with murder; prosecutors added charges of solicitation to commit tampering with physical evidence and solicitation to commit perjury based on his alleged jailhouse plots.

The court has heard that Craig, 47, had multiple affairs during his 23-year marriage with Angela - including women he met on a 'sugar dating' site such as Carrie Hageseth, who testified on Wednesday that Craig felt divorce would financially ruin him

Witnesses have testified so far during trial that Craig asked his teen daughter to create a deep-fake exonerating him by showing her mother asking him for poison – as well as a former cellmate who says the dentist ordered hits on the lead detective and others.

The jury has been told Craig and his wife had been struggling for years with his infidelity – and told family friends in 2019 that he was ‘suicidal’ and had drugged her during an attempt to take his life.

Angela’s brother and sister-in-law, who drove from Utah to help with the Craig children when Angela fell ill in March 2023, took the stand after Gore on Thursday.

Mark and Renee Pray each testified about how, on the morning of Angela’s final hospitalization, Craig repeatedly checked to to ensure they’d given his wife two capsules of antibiotic Clindamycin, which was in a prescription bottle next to her bed.

Mark Pray’s voice wavered as he described giving Angela two pills at 10am – or 10.01 – as instructed, then heading to work in a nearby bedroom and instructing his sister to call his cell if she needed him.

‘Around 10.20, 10.25, my cell was ringing from her,’ he told the court. ‘My wife was also telling me that she needed help.

‘I went in [Angela’s] bedroom, and she was … sitting up in her bed, bent over and couldn’t hold herself up,’ he said.

They decided to take her immediately back to the hospital, and Angela ‘was still able to provide a little bit of support, but I basically carried her out to the car, put her in and we went to the emergency department.

Craig, who has occasionally appeared to shed tears throughout the trial, has also been charged with perjury and evidence tampering offenses stemming from criminal plots he allegedly tried hatching from behind bars - such as looking for someone to kill the lead detective

‘I’m talking to her and asking her and she’s answering, but it’s difficult for her to answer, because she was telling me a lot of the same things – that she felt super shaky inside and just couldn’t hold herself up.

‘I was asking her questions mostly trying to keep her lucid while I was driving, he said, adding that Angela still ‘doesn’t have any idea’ what was wrong with her.

Craig later joined them at the hospital but urged Mark to take his vehicle and return home to rest and work, Mark testified.

‘He said, ‘Well, I must be keeping you from getting work done, and you’ve already spent a lot of time this morning dealing with this, so you can take my Suburban and go back home and do what you need to do – and I’ll stay here and hang,:’ Mark Pray testified.

‘The only reason I left is because I feel like spouse trumps brothers, and my impression was maybe he wants to be alone with Angela and not have toher people around at that moment – so I’ll respect that and go ahead and go back.’

Renee Pray told the court how Craig had been ‘questioning our choice to take her to the hospital … he felt like she should be resting.

The dentist also wanted to know if it was necessary to take urine samples because he said Angela wasn’t on drugs, she testified.

Mark Pray also told the court about Craig’s noticeable absences in the hours leading up to and after his wife’s death.

At one point, while Angela’s brother waited in a conference room with the couple’s children, he said he texted Craig: ‘Your kids need you up here.’

The victim’s sister, Toni Kofoed, followed her brother and sister-in-law onto the stand.

Struggling to compose herself, her voice shook as she described Angela as her ‘youngest sister and best friend.’

She told the court how Angela confided to her around 2018 that Craig had been having an affair for six months – and that he’d been unfaithful a decade earlier with ‘multiple people.’

Her baby sister texted her again on ‘December 9, 2022 and told me that she had found some stuff on Jim’s computer – and that he had made it impossible for her to stay,’ Kofoed said on Thursday.

‘She was going to stay until after Christmas, but after that, she was going to consider to end the marriage.’

Angela soon changed her mind, however, telling Kofoed that she’d decided to stay and pursue therapy – and by the month of her death, Kofoed believed the couple to be ‘on the mend.’

The trial continues on Friday.
