Anderlecht are closing on the signature of Kasper Schmeichel after he became a free agent last week.

The Dane had interest from Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Brentford during the last weeks of the window but wanted to be number one or challenging at a big club.

He is ready to agree a one year contract with the Belgian giants.

The 36-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side last summer on a three-year deal, after agreeing a move from Leicester.

He played 46 times in all competitions for Nice during his sole season at the club.

Nice finished ninth in Ligue 1 at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Schmeichel is set to join Anderlecht, who are second in the Belgian Pro League after the opening six matches of the season.

Anderlecht would become the 11th club Schmeichel has represented during his career.

The goalkeeper is best known for his 11 seasons at Leicester, which included the Foxes remarkable Premier League title win in 2015-16.

Schmeichel also won the FA Cup with Leicester in 2021.
