Mason Mount is set to be included in Manchester United’s squad to face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday, according to a report.

Mail Sport reported this week that the midfielder had returned to training having not played for four months, and he is expected to make his long-awaited return at Old Trafford this weekend, according to The Athletic.

Mount, who cost United £60million in the summer when he joined from Chelsea, made the last of his 12 appearances against Luton in November before he was injured in training.

United confirmed the news on the club’s official website saying that Mount has worked hard to regain fitness and ‘remained upbeat and positive throughout his rehabilitation’.

Asked about Mount’s fitness before last weekend’s win over Everton, manager Erik ten Hag said: ‘Mason Mount I think he is in a good spell now and he will return shortly, I think after the international break.’

It is reported however that he is ahead of schedule and is likely to be a substitute in United’s crunch fixture on Sunday afternoon.

It has been a frustrating season for the 25-year-old, who was United’s first signing of last summer’s transfer window before the club brought in Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. The England international has made just seven starts and five appearances off the bench.

While he will hope to earn a last-minute spot in the Three Lions’ squad for the European Championships in Germany, that now seems almost impossible.

United’s injury list is showing signs of clearing again after Ten Hag said that he expects Hojlund, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to be back for the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

However, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial and Tyrell Malacia remain unavailable to Ten Hag as the United manager goes into the cup game and final 10 Premier League fixtures of a season blighted by injury
