Despite three previous marriages that didn’t last, Halle Berry remains optimistic about enduring love. On Thursday, she shared the exciting news of her engagement to Grammy-winning musician Van Hunt.
“There’s been some misunderstanding that he proposed and I declined,” the 59-year-old Oscar winner clarified during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“That’s not true. I didn’t say no. We simply haven’t set a date yet,” Berry explained.
With a smile, she added, “Of course, I agreed to marry him! He did give me a lovely ring.” The term “little” seems amusing given the ring’s substantial size, featuring a central diamond encircled by a square-cut design set in a hefty gold band.
The Crime 101 action star was alluding to an interview with The Cut earlier in the week, where she disclosed that the 55-year-old neo-soul artist had popped the question last June. Although she hadn’t officially accepted then, she hinted she might make an exception for “health reasons” due to the benefits of having a legal spouse.

The Crime 101 action star was referring to her interview with The Cut on Monday where she revealed the 55-year-old neo soul artist had proposed last June, and she ‘hadn’t said yes’ but would make an exception for ‘health reasons’ due to the access that comes with a legal spouse.
Berry was first set up with Hunt through his brother during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, but they only texted and talked on the phone until their first date four months later.
‘After my third divorce, people started to say, “What’s wrong with her? She’s crazy. She can’t keep a man,”‘ the Re-spin co-founder recalled to the mag.
‘I pretty much stopped doing interviews for a decade because I got tired of the same old story. It was always: “Poor Halle — Unlucky in Love Again.”‘
Berry continued: ‘And I would always argue, “Who says I want to keep a man if he’s not the right man?” I’m in the best relationship I have ever had.’
This will mark the bride-to-be’s fourth time walking down the aisle, having divorced her first husband – baseball player David Justice – in 1997 after three years of marriage.
Berry’s marriage to second ex-husband – singer Eric Benét – ended in 2005 after two years of wedded bliss (and his reported rehab stint for sex addiction).
Miss Ohio 1986 was then married to her Dark Tide co-star Olivier Martinez for two years, which included welcoming their 12-year-old son Maceo and she reportedly pays him $8K/month in child support.

‘I realized I was just pulling in mirror images of myself — people who were broken, people with childhood wounds that weren’t addressed,’ the daughter of an abusive, alcoholic father explained.
‘I had to face the pain of what happened to me as a kid and release my secrets. I had to get it out of my body so I could fully love myself and show up for my own children. I cried many a night.’
