Refresh for latest…: Warner Bros/New Line’s The Nun II continued to conjure strong business around the globe this weekend, taking the top spot again worldwide and overseas. The sophomore session of $30.1M in 72 offshore markets brings the international box office cume to $102.3M and worldwide to $158.8M so far.

More on The Nun II in a bit, but first let’s check in on Hercule Poirot and 20th Century Studios/Disney’s A Haunting in Venice which debuted to $37.2M globally, including $22.7M from 51 overseas markets. This is essentially where the $60M-budgeted film was expected to land internationally, where it performed best in the European majors. There were No. 1s in the UK, Spain and Italy, and No. 2s in France, Germany and Brazil among the key markets.

Scores are about on par with the last Kenneth Branagh-directed Agatha Christie yarn. IMAX generated $900K offshore.

The Top 10 opening markets are the UK ($2.6M), China ($2.4M), Italy ($2.1M), France ($1.7M), Spain ($1.2M), Korea ($1M), Japan ($900K), Germany $800K), Mexico ($700K) and Australia ($700K).

While Haunting did best in Europe, The Nun II won the head-to-head battle in its France opening this frame, coming in at No. 1 with $3.1M on 468 screens, roughly on par with Annabelle and Scream VI and ahead of The Conjuring (+51%), M3GAN (+137%) and Evil Dead Rise (+145%).

Overall, the Michael Chaves-directed scarer, which is doing heavenly business in Latin America, saw a good 49% drop in the holdover markets. In like-for-likes and using today’s exchange rates, Nun II is tracking ahead of all the films in the Conjuring Universe with the exception of The Nun, and also above recent horror titles Evil Dead Rise and M3GAN.

There are also still some significant markets to come including Germany and Korea this month and Japan in October.

Here are the Top 5 markets to date: Mexico ($14.9M), Indonesia ($7.6M), Brazil ($7.2M), Italy ($5.5M) and the UK ($4.9M).

Shah Rukh Khan’s Atlee-directed Jawan grossed another $17.7M globally per comScore, though our sources have it higher at $20.8M this weekend, pushing the worldwide total to an estimated $101.3M again per comScore ($104.2M per Deadline sources). In India, the estimated cume is $68.6M to date (as ever, these numbers come with the caveat that India is notoriously difficult to track, and we will update accordingly). At an estimated 570 crore in India, it is currently the 3rd biggest Bollywood movie ever, and could take over the top spot if it outgrosses SRK’s own Pathaan at 638 crore.

Over to Oppenheimer which, as we reported yesterday, crossed $900M worldwide on Friday. The full international weekend in 83 markets was $10.8M on the Christopher Nolan opus, lifting the offshore cume to $594.1M and global $912.7M global. Also as we wrote yesterday, Oppenheimer helped push Universal across the $4B mark at the global box office this year.

Oppenheimer is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time globally, ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s also Nolan’s 3rd highest-grossing title ever and the 3rd biggest movie of the year. In IMAX, the global total is now $179M.

Highlights this session include Oppenheimer overtaking Dunkirk in the UK as Nolan’s biggest movie ever there. China had a great -51% hold, with Friday to Saturday uplift of 170%. The cume there is $54M, in line with Tenet at the same point, having already surpassed the lifetimes of The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk, and also topping Skyfall this weekend. Italy this session overtook Australia as Oppenheimer’s 5th biggest playdate so far.

Oppenheimer’s Top Five offshore markets through Sunday are the UK ($73M), China ($54M), Germany ($48M), France ($41.6M) and Italy ($26.8M).

Also scoring an estimated $10.8M (RMB 78.5M), Millennium’s Expend4bles opened in China this weekend. These are estimates from Maoyan and we are waiting on confirmed numbers for the Sylvester Stallone/Jason Statham/Dolph Lundgren/Randy Couture-starrer. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran and Andy Garcia join the cast this time around. Further international rollout continues this week alongside domestic.

Sony/Escape Artists’ The Equalizer 3 scored another $8.3M in 54 markets (-32%), taking the global cume to $132.4M with international contributing $58.7M. Notable holds were seen in Netherlands (-6%), UK (-13%), Germany (-18%), France (-19%), Saudi Arabia (-19%), Spain (-38%) and UAE (-38%).

The Top 5 to date are the UK ($7.9M), Germany ($5.7M), France ($5.6M), Australia ($4.9M) and Saudi Arabia ($4M).

Key markets still to release are Brazil, Japan and Mexico in October.
