PALM BAY, Fla. – Tragedy struck early Monday morning in Palm Bay when a house fire claimed the lives of a 10-year-old boy and an elderly woman.
The blaze was reported at approximately 2:20 a.m. on the 500 block of Janus Road NE.
Palm Bay Fire Rescue reported that upon arrival, the house was already engulfed in flames, with about 90% of the structure involved. Firefighters encountered a woman outside the residence who informed them that two individuals remained trapped inside.
“Despite multiple attempts to enter from different access points, extreme fire conditions thwarted our rescue efforts,” fire officials stated in a press release. “The situation was further complicated by significant clutter inside the home, hampering fire suppression and rescue operations.”
Authorities confirmed that the elderly woman and the young boy did not survive the fire.
The woman found outside was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene and subsequently transported to Health First Medical Center for further care.
Following the incident, Palm Bay Fire Rescue activated its Peer Support Team to assist responders and family members. The department’s Chaplain Team, along with the American Red Cross, also responded to provide support to those affected.
“Palm Bay Fire Rescue wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones impacted by this tragic loss,” the agency said.
Palm Bay Fire Rescue was assisted on scene by the Palm Bay Police Department and Brevard County Fire Rescue. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
No injuries were reported among responding personnel.
