TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With hurricane season approaching, more than a quarter of Floridians are expressing increased concern about this year’s season compared to last year, according to new survey data from AAA.

This comes on a heels of a 2024 season that hammered the state’s Gulf Coast with three hurricane landfalls.

In the survey, 28% of Florida residents indicated that they are more worried about the upcoming season, while 69% reported feeling the same level of concern as they did last year. These findings closely resemble the results from a similar AAA survey conducted at this time in 2024.

There has been a slight increase in the number of Floridians willing to evacuate if ordered this year, rising to 77% from 73% before the 2024 season. Nearly a third of those surveyed mentioned they would evacuate in the event of any major hurricane.

Experts are predicting another above-average hurricane season, so now is the time to get prepared.

“The severity of the 2024 hurricane season was a stark reminder of how vulnerable we are to natural disasters,” Jennifer Pintacuda, President of AAA’s Florida-based insurance companies, said in a statement. “Now more than ever, it’s crucial for residents to revisit their insurance policies and ensure they are fully protected before the next storm approaches.”
