I live in a 7t lorry complete with a flatscreen TV and a king-size bed and I save thousands on rent - but an essential item costs me a fortune

A man who lives full-time in a lorry says he has discovered a ‘perfect lifestyle’ and lives the life of luxury – all while saving thousands on rent every year.

Sam, from the south of England, has shared a glimpse into his unconventional lifestyle aboard a 7.5t lorry – which boasts a king-size bed, 43″ TV, underfloor heating, kitchen, and bathroom facilities.

On TikTok, the nomad, who uses the handle @tillyrvadventure, claims he spent £65,000 – 70,000 on refurbishing the vehicle and decking it out with lavish amenities.

Now, Sam, who works as a firefighter, only needs to cover the bare minimum for bills –  with his largest expense being the fuel for his massive vehicle he calls the TillyRV.

Despite calling it his ‘midlife crisis conversion’, Sam insists that he has finally discovered the ‘perfect’ lifestyle and says it’s ‘the most at home I have ever felt’.

In one carousel of pictures posted to the app, Sam says he’s had ‘a lot of people tell me that a lorry cannot be a home’.

The traveller, who is also a father, adds that countless people have encouraged him to sell the lorry and buy a house instead, but he tells them he’s more than happy with life on the road.

‘I have rented and I have owned in the past, yet always felt lost,’ he says.

‘Having TillyRV seems to give me comfort because I can be close to those I love yet still run free when I need…’

‘I have come to learn that a home doesn’t have to mean bricks and mortar and that home is an emotion and a feeling rather than a physical asset.

‘And if a boat, lorry, tent, house, caravan etc. makes you feel “at home” then you are well within your rights to call it that without judgement.’

The adventurer insisted he has no problems parking, explaining that the lorry is fully kitted out with the essentials and more.

The vehicle boasts a king-size bed, wide screen TV, shower, toilet, kitchen facilities, bunk beds for his children.

Sam said he had never run into problems keeping warm during the winter months and had always managed to keep cosy – particularly with the help of underfloor heating.

He has even named the vehicle, christening it TillyRV.

Despite saving thousands on rent every year, the nomad does have to fork out for some costs, which include fuel and the ‘minimum’ on bills.

He says his biggest expense is fuelling the enormous lorry, which can cost £1.42 per litre.

He acknowledges that it was ‘expensive’ but says it is ‘drastically lower’ than what he was paying to rent.

‘Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all smooth sailing and things do break, but I factor this into my cost of living,’ he adds.

Sam even says that he ‘never gets lonely’ and enjoys living a life of solitude away from conventional housing.

‘I love having the space, the freedom, the fresh air and the greenery around me.’

Sam claims that any negatives of living in a lorry are drastically outweighed by the fact that he is able to wake up to incredible views and go on ‘regular adventures’.

When he’s not looking for new ways to improve his lorry, the nomad works full time on a 4 on 4 shift pattern, meaning he works for 12-hour days which are followed by four consecutive days off.

The unconventional shift pattern allows him plenty of time for travelling, adding that his favourite thing about ‘lorrylife’ is ‘the places I get to visit and the people I have had the pleasure of meeting along the way’.

He explains that his original plan was to reside in the van for five years but says he’s now ‘realistically’ looking at another one or two summers living on the road.

But not before spending an ‘amazing’ summer travelling around in his lorry, stopping at destinations including Dorset, Cornwall, Switzerland and the Dolomites.
