I’ll never forget when I signed for Manchester United, as a record transfer, I knew there was pressure to deliver. Yet Sir Bob was the first to come up to me, shake my hand and say ‘Welcome to Manchester United, son. It’s a great club, but most importantly, make sure you enjoy yourself.’

He didn’t have to do that, the standing of the man, but he knew like anyone else I’d be nervous and he made sure I felt at home immediately.

I found out he did the same with every new signing. It was that touch of class he always had about him. A terrific footballer, one without parallel at Manchester United, a fierce competitor, yet always the great gentleman.

It’s a sad day for the family, for Manchester United but also for football because he was a player that spread the name of the sport around the globe. All the greats held him in such great respect. When you look back at the 1996 World Cup, he didn’t just win it, he had some terrific games throughout that tournament.

But he wasn’t just a great player, he was a great person, he had time for everyone and wanted to help everyone.

I’d wanted to be like him when I was growing up so I was fortunate to spend more time with him when I became an ambassador for the club.

We shared some memorable moments that I will always treasure and wherever you went in the world people were in awe of him. But despite it all, he was always the most humble of men.
