Shortly after President Donald Trump announced an unprecedented step to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), a fatal shooting occurred Monday evening in a popular neighborhood in Washington, D.C., marking the year’s 100th homicide in the city.

The MPD reported that Third District officers responded around 6:56 p.m. on August 11th to reports of gunfire in the 1200 block of 12th Street NW in Logan Circle.

They found the victim, later identified as 33-year-old Tymark Wells

The incident took place just a short distance from where two other recent homicides occurred: a congressional intern and a former government official, both referenced by Trump as instances of violent crime.

Announcing the federal control over the city’s police force, Trump stated that his administration would implement “decisive action” to ensure the capital’s safety.

The Washington, D.C., City Council called the temporary takeover a “manufactured intrusion on local authority.”

“Violent crime in the District is currently at the lowest rates witnessed in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unnecessary because there is no Federal emergency,” the council declared in a joint statement. “Moreover, the National Guard lacks public safety training or any understanding of local laws. The Guard’s function does not include crime investigation or resolution in the District. Deploying the National Guard is an unnecessary measure with no actual purpose.”

To aid in solving Monday’s shooting, the MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to arrests and convictions of those involved. Anyone with information is encouraged to call (202) 727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House and the MPD for comment.
