In an intriguing anecdote from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s newly released memoir, President Donald Trump reportedly shared a story about his daughter Ivanka and NFL star Tom Brady, with Ivanka’s husband Jared Kushner present during the conversation.
In “Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery,” Newsom reveals that Trump recounted an incident on board Marine One, the presidential helicopter, where Brady had once shown interest in dating Ivanka. The revelation came as Trump allegedly told Newsom that Brady, while single, approached Ivanka at an event and requested her phone number, which Trump provided.
Newsom details how Brady attempted to reach Ivanka, leaving a message that went unanswered. When Brady informed Trump about the lack of response, Trump called his daughter to inquire about the situation.
“I asked Ivanka, ‘Why aren’t you calling Tom Brady back? He’s a great guy!’ She told me she was in love,” Trump reportedly recounted, pointing to Kushner, who was present. “I said, ‘You’re in love with who?’ And she mentioned Jared,” Newsom wrote.
Trump allegedly expressed his surprise, questioning Ivanka’s choice by saying, “Not the guy whose father just got out of prison?” This comment referred to Jared’s father, Charles Kushner, who had served a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges including tax evasion, witness retaliation, and making false campaign contributions.
Jared’s father Charles Kushner served two years in federal prison after pleading guilty in 2004 to 18 criminal counts, including tax evasion, witness retaliation, and making false campaign contributions.
Trump pardoned the elder Kushner at the end of his first term and appointed him ambassador to France in his second term.
As Newsom recalls, Kushner admitted after a period of “dead air”: “Yes, sir. I know I wasn’t your first choice.”
