Minneapolis residents are gearing up to elect their next mayor in the upcoming general election on Tuesday.

Among the 15 candidates vying for the position is the current mayor, Jacob Frey, a Democrat who is eligible for another term. Also in the race is state Senator Omar Fateh, a self-identified Democratic socialist often likened to New York’s Zohran Mamdani, another prominent figure in the Democratic socialist movement.

The city adopted ranked choice voting back in 2009. This voting method, as explained by the nonpartisan organization FairVote, allows citizens to rank their top three candidates. Should a voter’s first choice not succeed, their vote is automatically transferred to their second choice.

Frey has garnered support from influential figures such as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar, while Fateh is endorsed by Representative Ilhan Omar.

Police staffing remains a significant issue for Minneapolis voters. The calls for defunding the police gained momentum after George Floyd’s tragic death in 2020. However, Frey has openly opposed such measures, stating in an NPR interview that he would never adopt them.

One of the biggest concerns among voters in Minneapolis has been police staffing. Following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, calls for the city to defund the police started to grow. Frey has criticized the measure and told NPR he would never implement it.

Fateh said Frey has “failed to implement meaningful reforms to police, and has vetoed one good solution after another.” One of his campaign promises includes funding public services to help residents going through a crisis.

Polls close in Minneapolis at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Follow election results in the Minneapolis mayoral race in the tracker below:
