Jada Pinkett Smith confidently discussed her battle with alopecia ahead of the Academy Awards, saying how she loved her bald head and wasn’t bothered by public opinion, but has yet to comment on her husband slapping Chris Rock.

Will Smith launched the slap heard round the world when he struck Rock in the face during Sunday’s ceremony after the comedian made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s buzzed haircut, which as evidenced by her unamused expression.

The star’s reaction seemed to contradict the body positive talk she gave on her social media accounts less than a week before the Oscars.

‘I feel the freedom today – I don’t give two craps what people think of this bald head of mine. Because guess what? I love it,’ Pinkett Smith said in a TikTok addressing the beauty pressures that black women face in Hollywood.

‘I always had to do my hair in ways that didn’t feel natural to me because I’m trying to play the game,’ the Matrix: Resurrections actress said. ‘So I had to learn to get the courage to go, “Nah, I’m not doing that.”‘

Smith, who apologized to Rock for the incident on Monday, initially attributed the attack to his calling in life to ‘love people and to protect people’.

The Smiths’ son, Jaden Smith, jumped to his father’s defense after the awards, but his mother and sister, Willow Smith, remained silent and continued on with their evening as if nothing had happened.

Jada said last week: ‘Being a black woman and dealing with hair in Hollywood, in the era I came up in, having your hair look as European as possible was always the thing.

‘That was really challenging, you know, because I liked my hair out wild and curly.’

However, the star claims ‘nobody wanted that’ and she was often styling her hair in unnatural ways.

‘So if I’m doing a cover, everybody’s [like], “No, we want your hair straight and flowy,” when it’s like, “All right, cool, but that’s not really what my hair likes to do,”‘ she explained.

The actress encouraged others to ‘be proud of their crown’ and embrace their appearance, as she has with her balding, which she attributes to alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that can cause hair loss and balding.

Pinkett Smith has been very open about her ‘issues with hair loss’ online, first detailing the diagnosis during a 2018 episode of her show Red Table Talk.

‘It was terrifying when it first started,’ the Girls Trip star said at the time.

‘I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’ It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear. That’s why I cut my hair, and why I continue to cut it.’

However, in December 2021 she offered a different narrative, saying in an Instagram video:  ‘Now at this point, I can only laugh. Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here. Look at that.’

‘So it just showed up like that and this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So I thought I’d just share it so y’all are not asking any questions,’ she added.

In various other Instagram posts she applauded the move to embrace baldness.

‘Willow made me do it because it was time to let go BUT … my 50’s are bout to be divinely lit with this shed,’ Pinkett Smith posted in July 2021 alongside a photo with her daughter.

In September, sharing a video of a hairstylist shaving her head, the mother-of-two encouraged her viewers to tune into her livestream and support three ‘BOLD women who decide to take a COURAGEOUS hair journey and go GORGEOUSLY BALD!’

The actress has also made several posts encouraging her followers to love themselves.

The slap occurred after Rock, who was introducing the award for Best Documentary, joked: ‘Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see ya.’

Smith initially walked to the stage from his front-row seat and smacked Rock with an open right hand.

The comedian staggered and exclaimed: ‘Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.’

Will, visibly emotional, walked back to his seat in the audience and shouted: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.’

‘Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke,’ said Rock, referencing 1997 film starring Demi Moore, who shaved her head to portray Jordan O’Neil.

‘Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!’ Will replied once again.

On Monday, the actor wrote in an Instagram post that he was ’embarrassed’ by his actions, which shocked the ceremony attendees, producers and viewers.

‘Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,’ he wrote.

‘My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

‘I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.’

Smith then went on to say sorry to the organizers and the producers of the show.

Rock has not responded to Smith’s apology, or commented on the Sunday night incident.

Smith’s apology came as the Academy on Monday condemned Smith’s actions and said it had started a formal review of the incident that cast a shadow over the film honors.

‘The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,’ the group wrote in a statement. ‘We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.’

Despite Smith’s apology, Pinkett Smith has not commented on the incident.

Her son, Jaden, was squarely in his father’s corner Sunday night, taking to Twitter to issued his support.

‘And that’s how we do it!’ Jaden, 23, tweeted after the ceremony, adding in a since-deleted post: ‘My Dads Speech Made Me Cry.’

Willow Smith, 21, has not publicly commented on her father’s outburst but did post an image of herself to Instagram.
