Nicole Mitchell, a former Minnesota state Senator representing the Democratic party, expressed regret before being sentenced to six months in jail. She was convicted of felony burglary for entering her stepmother’s residence unlawfully in April 2024.

Mitchell told the court she felt remorse over her actions before the sentencing, saying she had “made continuous bad decisions.”

“I made a significant mistake and have taken a wrong path,” Mitchell stated. “I aim to improve myself and will use this period, as determined today, to ponder ways to make amends.”

Judge Michael Fritz of Becker County allowed Mitchell to complete her 180-day sentence at Ramsey County Jail through a work release program. Her lawyers mentioned that Mitchell, who has a history as a broadcast and military meteorologist, recently took a position at a fast-food establishment. She will remain on probation for five years.

The authorities recovered a black backpack wedged in a window, containing two laptops, a cellphone, a driver’s license, Senate identification, and some Tupperware, as per the complaint. Officers noted that Mitchell was equipped with a flashlight wrapped in a black sock.

During her testimony, Carol Mitchell said she felt “extremely violated” following the incident.

After the sentencing, Carol Mitchell told The Minnesota Star Tribune that she didn’t think six months was enough time for “what she put me through.”

“It’s clear that she will endure significant consequences… such as losing her children and her job… I suppose there are indeed consequences for her actions,” she remarked to the newspaper.
