A stern judge has delivered a scathing reprimand to an abusive couple and their attorney after they were convicted of severely abusing their young daughter. The courtroom drama unfolded as Circuit Judge Charles Elliott handed down a life sentence to Lance and Hannah Campbell for brutally beating their three-year-old child, an act that led to her hospitalization. This development was reported by the local news outlet, the Decatur Daily.
Judge Elliott addressed Lance Campbell directly, stating that the life sentence would provide him “plenty of time to learn what it is to be a man.” The judge’s remarks came after an apology from the defense attorney, who had implausibly suggested that the family’s Chihuahua was responsible for the child’s injuries.
The case was heard in the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court of Alabama and revolved around the 2021 hospitalization of Hannah Campbell’s daughter. On May 30 of that year, the child was rushed to Decatur Morgan Hospital in northern Alabama with life-threatening injuries, as detailed in an arrest affidavit.
Hannah Campbell initially claimed her daughter had fallen from the concrete steps of their home in Hartselle. However, medical professionals determined that the explanation did not align with the severity of the child’s injuries, leading to further investigation and the couple’s eventual conviction.

Hannah claimed that her daughter had fallen from the concrete steps of their home in nearby Hartselle, but medics determined that this was inconsistent with her wounds.
She was rushed to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, where doctors determined she had suffered serious internal injuries, including cuts to her pancreas and liver.
The little girl needed several surgeries and stayed in hospital for a month afterwards to recover.

At the start of the hearing, defense attorney Kevin Teague asked the judge to consider Lance’s poor education history, describing him as a ‘slow learner’.
Judge Elliott responded by asking prosecutors to project photographs on a screen showing the three-year-old’s injuries in hospital a day after she was injured.
The shocking images showed the girl with two black eyes, a laceration above her right eye, and deep purple bruising across her arms, legs and buttocks.
Several people watching from the gallery gasped in horror and some turned their faces away as the gruesome images were shown.
Elliott later brought Teague’s comment about Lance being a ‘slow learner’ back to haunt him as he handed down the sentence.
‘I’m going to give you plenty of time to learn, plenty of time to learn what it is to be a man,’ Elliott told Lance as he gave him the maximum penalty of life behind bars.
‘Mr. Teague says the sentence needs to fit. Mr. Campbell, that jumpsuit fits you perfectly.’
Teague also tussled with the judge about what caused one of the bruises on the child’s left buttock, claiming that a striped mark was the result of a bite from the couple’s Chihuahua.

‘The super dark bruise on her left buttocks, Kevin, that I think everyone in the courtroom can see,’ Elliott said as the defense attorney squirmed.
‘You’re saying that straight line is without pattern, because at trial you said the dog did that.’
‘It doesn’t look like a belt or even a switch to me,’ Teague said.
‘I was thinking a belt buckle,’ Elliott responded. ‘I think we can all agree right now, Mr. Teague, that a jury of his peers found him guilty of doing this.’
Teague later apologized to Elliott for growing emotional, but the judge hit back.
‘You haven’t seen emotional yet, Kevin,’ Elliott said. ‘Don’t worry about it.’
The court also heard text messages exchanged between Hannah and Lance Campbell as they panicked about potentially being caught for their heinous crimes.
‘We can go to jail. I don’t want to go to jail. I’m freaking out,’ Hannah wrote in one message.
Morgan County Assistant District Attorney Courtney Schellack said that Hannah also goaded her son to tell authorities that he did not see them inflict any of his sister’s injuries.

Schellack added that the Campbells violently abused their child and ‘let her sit for 24 hours before going to the hospital’.
‘She would have died if not taken to Children’s Hospital,’ Schellack said.
The court previously heard that Hannah also put makeup on the child to try to conceal her injuries in between trips to the two different hospitals.
Elliott blasted the mother for inconsistencies in her testimony about this, saying he had ‘seen amoebas shift less than your story did’.
‘It’s like shaking water around in a glass, watching your story change,’ he added.
The jury deliberated for only an hour before convicting both defendants of aggravated child abuse. Both parents will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
