Katherine Heigl slams 'useless' fans over her Mar-a-Lago appearance

Katherine Heigl recently found herself at the center of a social media storm, taking to the internet to express her frustration with what she termed “useless” fans. This came after she faced criticism for attending a fundraiser held at Mar-a-Lago.

The former star of “Grey’s Anatomy” made her presence known on the red carpet for the first time in two years at this event, hosted at Donald Trump’s Palm Beach estate last Sunday. At the occasion, Heigl was seen posing for pictures alongside former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, famed animal trainer Cesar Millan, and other attendees. The event aimed to benefit the Big Dog Ranch Rescue charity, with Lara Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, serving as co-chair.

Faced with backlash due to the political associations of the venue, Heigl fiercely defended her choice, emphasizing that the cause of animal welfare should rise above political affiliations. She did not hold back in her responses to several Instagram detractors.

In a statement given to JustJared, a publication that covered her attendance, Heigl remarked, “Animals don’t vote… As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent. This should not be a polarizing issue.”

Responding to a particular criticism where a user implied animals might have better judgment than her, Heigl retorted, “Because your judgment is so sound? Just curious… what do you do that really matters?” This exchange highlights the tensions between celebrity actions and public perception in today’s politically charged climate.

Heigl, long considered one of Hollywood’s most candid stars, had previously gone directly to Instagram to respond to critics – and her replies under JustJared’s post were as unrestrained as they were pointed.

When one user suggested the animals would have better judgment than the actress, she shot back: ‘Because your judgment is so sound? Just curious… what do you do that really matters.’

From there, her responses only intensified, leaving fans stunned by her biting retorts.

When one critic wrote, ‘There are so many amazing rescues to align yourself with that aren’t hosting events there – and so many ways to get involved that aren’t putting on a dress and drinking cocktails masquerading as helping,’ Heigl quickly fired back.

‘How are you so sure about that…have you been to any? Have you donated a significant part of your income to anything? Anything you claim to care so much about? Have you done anything more than comment on what someone else is doing or not doing to your standard? Just curious…’ she replied.

The drama escalated when a follower referenced her Grey’s Anatomy character, writing, ‘That’s why Alex Karev cheated on you with Olivia.’

Heigl posted, ‘Does this make you smile? Making a dumb joke when animals in this country are suffering and I’m doing everything and anything I can to stop their suffering?

‘Let me ask…do you do anything that really matters? Other than comment on some one else’s Instagram? Do you really think that actually matters? Makes any kind of difference?

‘Seriously…I’d love to know your thoughts on your uselessness.’

Other critics did not fare any better.

When one wrote, ’Who even is she?’ Heigl snapped: ‘doesn’t matter. Do you care about animals? It doesn’t matter who I am only what I do. The same goes for you! Animals might not be your thing but I bet you care deeply about something that matters! Do your part! Don’t waste your time scrolling and making comments!’

After another fan wrote, ‘She made a choice’ with clapping hands emojis, Heigl responded in kind: ‘yes I did.’

And when another chimed in, ‘Sounds like times are tough, and she’s trying to make deals, no matter who’s offering,’ Heigl tore into them.

‘Really? So I’m using animal advocacy to what? Line my pockets? Interesting…seems to be costing me more than I can make…but that’s ok,’ she began.

‘At least my parents taught me to give more than I get. Taught me to do more than just judge. You seem…really meaningful in today’s society. Just keep screaming your virtue signaling bullsh** while doing nothing that really matters. Good on you!’

The intense back-and-forth came to a crescendo when one follower said, ‘I didn’t think it’d be possible for her to be even LESS likeable and MORE irrelevant.’

Heigl replied with a single, pointed line: ‘I’m sorry who are you?’

The Daily Mail has reached out to Heigl’s representatives for comment.

But this isn’t the first time the actress has found herself at the center of media scrutiny.

She shot to fame in 2005 as Dr Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, earning an Emmy for the role just two years later.

In 2008, she shocked many by withdrawing from the awards race, saying she hadn’t been ‘given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination.’

Many saw it as a dig at showrunner Shonda Rhimes. Heigl later told Entertainment Weekly she ‘could have handled the situation more gracefully’ and privately apologized to Rhimes for the perceived snub.

Tensions flared again in 2009 when she told David Letterman that her 17-hour workdays were ‘cruel and mean,’ something she later admitted left her feeling ‘embarrassed’ and ‘whiny.’

Heigl’s controversies go back even further. She told Vanity Fair that her 2007 film Knocked Up was ‘a little sexist’ and painted women as ‘shrews, humorless and uptight,’ upsetting co-star Seth Rogen, who told Howard Stern he felt his ‘trust’ had been ‘betrayed.’

By 2009, reports surfaced that Heigl had missed filming for season six of Grey’s Anatomy.

She denied this, explaining she was on ‘family leave’ after adopting her daughter Naleigh.

She eventually reached an agreement to end her contract 18 months early, making her final appearance in January 2010.

After leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Heigl continued to appear in films and TV, including Suits and Netflix’s Firefly Lane (2021–2023).

Yet her string of media controversies has undeniably shaped her Hollywood reputation.

‘I may have said a couple of things you didn’t like, but then that escalated to “she’s ungrateful,” then that escalated to “she’s difficult,” and that escalated to “she’s unprofessional,”’ she told the Washington Post in 2021.

‘What is your definition of difficult? Somebody with an opinion that you don’t like? Now, I’m 42, and that s*** pisses me off.’

Over a decade ago, Heigl and her husband Josh Kelley moved to a ranch in Utah.

They are raising their three children there: daughters Naleigh, 16, Adalaide, 13, and son Joshua, nine.
