KENT, Ohio — Kent State head football coach Kenni Burns has been placed on leave from his duties with pay, 3News has confirmed.
In a statement, the university did not give a reason why Burns has been sidelined, adding, “No further comments on this personnel matter will be provided.” Offensive coordinator Mark Carney will serve as acting head coach for the time being, with Executive Deputy Athletic Director Greg Glaus continuing with his usual direct oversight of the football program.
Burns took over as KSU’s head coach in 2023 and has posted a 1-23 record over two seasons. The Golden Flashes are currently in the midst of a nation-worst 21-game losing streak after going 0-12 this past year.
CBS Sports reported last November that Burns faced nearly $24,000 in credit card debts. Court records show Portage County’s Hometown Bank sued him last year for payment, with a judge ruling in the bank’s favor. The case was later dismissed after Burns “satisfied the judgement.”
Burns made $475,000 as Kent State’s coach last season, according to CBS Sports, and recently signed an extension through 2028.
