Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool bench were left in hysterics after watching Joe Gomez try to open his goal-scoring account with a long-range strike.

Klopp watched on as his side triumphed 3-0 over Southampton in their FA Cup fifth round clash – with Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas finding the net to wrap up a win.

A number of Liverpool’s youngsters were given a run out at Anfield – given the Reds’  mounting injury concerns – with Gomez one of the few senior players on the pitch.

In the 14th minute of the match, Gomez tried his luck from long-range as he fired an ambitious effort towards goal.

However, his strike flew well wide of the goal and, in truth, never looked like troubling Saints stopper Joe Lumley.

Fortunately for Gomez, Klopp and the rest of the Liverpool bench were able to see the funny side in the situation – as cameras quickly cut to show them laughing.

ITV footage showed the Reds coaches and players chuckling away in the dugout, with one squad member even placing their head in their hands.

Afterwards, Liverpool boss Klopp compared Liverpool’s young team with darts World Championship runner-up Luke Littler.

‘It is a little bit like the new darts sensation, it is fine for tonight,’ said Klopp.

‘Tomorrow, leave the boys in the corner. Everyone who is with us, we should have our moments, they will have more moments than we expect.

‘Don’t forget it when the transfer window opens, don’t (ask for) 12 signings!’

Elsewhere on the night, fellow youngster Jayden Danns scored a brace before describing the occasion as ‘a dream come true’.

Speaking to ITV afterwards, Danns said: ‘It’s a dream come true, I’ve supported the club since birth so to come on and score at the Kop end was unreal.

‘It doesn’t feel real to me, it feels like I’m in a movie. I don’t think I’ll sleep tonight!’

Danns went on to reflect on his two goals, as he said: ‘It was this lad [Elliott] who slipped me in, I just seen him and thought he’s got the vision and the ‘keeper came close, so you just have to dink it.
