The murder trial of Brendan Banfield took a dramatic turn when his former lover, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, appeared in court, shedding the glamorous persona she once flaunted. On Wednesday, Magalhaes, a 25-year-old nanny from Brazil, stepped into the Fairfax County courtroom, presenting a modest appearance in a beige sweater and black skirt, a stark contrast to the daring outfits she wore during her affair with Banfield.

Her transformation was evident as she donned thick black glasses and let her long black hair fall naturally, seemingly barefaced, as she prepared to testify before the 40-year-old defendant. Banfield stands accused of a heinous crime, charged with the murder of his wife, Christine Banfield, aged 37, and another man, Joseph Ryan, who was 39, in a chilling plot allegedly crafted to clear the way for a future with his young mistress.

Prosecutors presented a case suggesting that Magalhaes and Banfield conspired to lure Ryan to a Virginia residence using a BDSM website. They allegedly staged an elaborate scene to falsely implicate Ryan in Christine’s murder. As part of a plea bargain, Magalhaes admitted to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Her cooperation is now pivotal in the prosecution’s efforts to convict Banfield.

Banfield, 40, is accused of murdering his wife, Christine Banfield, 37, and another man, Joseph Ryan, 39, on February 24, 2023, as part of a twisted plot to be with his young mistress.

Prosecutors said Magalhaes and Banfield worked together to lure Ryan to a Virginia home through a BDSM website and staged the scene to make it look like he killed Christine.

Magalhaes pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter as part of a plea deal in exchange for cooperating in Banfield’s prosecution.

During her testimony, it was revealed that the pair had planned to be together after Banfield’s wife and the random man were murdered, according to a letter brought up in court.

In a correspondence to her brother, penned in August 2024, Magalhaes told her family that Banfield wanted to move to Brazil with her and build a house.

Magalhaes also revealed that she has been in contact with producers while behind bars about buying the rights to her story that might one day be presented on a streaming service.

Those producers have acted as her ‘support system’ as they help fund her prison life by paying for her communications and commissary, she detailed.

‘They have become my support system, so they be helping me with money to communicate with my mom, my family in Brazil and whoever I want to communicate with,’ the au pair said during cross-examination with her lover’s defense attorney.

She added: ‘And money to my commissary and that stuff.’

When asked during the trial if producers had ‘thrown a number out for your story,’ Magalhaes said ‘Yes’ and that she intends on sharing ‘the truth.’

She said she has not finalized a deal with them yet.

In another letter Magalhaes wrote to her mother while in jail, which was also brought up in court, she said she would take the blame for her and Banfield.

‘I’d give my life for his and I would never do anything to hurt him or against him,’ she wrote at the time.

‘Whatever they’re saying, whatever they want to believe, I don’t care. I’ll take the blame for the both of us.’

Meanwhile, in another correspondence that she read aloud in court, Magalhaes said ‘I’m not willing to spend life in prison for something I didn’t do.’

Her testimony comes a day after Banfield wept in court while listening to the 911 call from the night his wife and Ryan died.

The disturbing call was made on February 24, 2023, from the Banfields’ home in Herndon, where Christine was found inside her bedroom suffering from stab wounds alongside Ryan, who was shot.

Banfield, a former IRS officer, stared down at the desk in front of him as the recording of Magalhaes frantically asking a 911 operator for help began playing.

The alleged murderer hardly glanced up as the phone call continued, except to jot some notes down as his voice was heard for the first time on the call.

‘There’s somebody here I shot him [Ryan], but he stabbed her [Christine],’ Banfield was heard stating, per NBC’s report.

The husband added during the call that his wife had several marks on her neck and was bleeding as he asked the operator what to do.

As the call played, Banfield began to rub away his tears with his eyes locked on the table in front of him.

‘She’s got a very big hole in her neck,’ he told the operator during the nine-minute call.

On the day of the killings, prosecutors said Magalhaes called 911 at least twice within minutes, but put the phone down before speaking with first responders.

More than ten minutes later, prosecutors alleged in court, Magalhaes called 911 a final time and reported the emergency.

Prosecutors said evidence suggested Ryan was gunned down as part of a scheme to get rid of Christine.

Investigators first became suspicious about Magalhaes’ story after she and Banfield failed to disclose their alleged romance when speaking to detectives.

Police said they uncovered evidence of a secret lovers’ getaway and pointed out that just eight months after the killings, Magalhaes had moved into the main bedroom.

Prosecutors allege that someone created a fake account for Christine on a BDSM site and made plans to have ‘rough sex’ with Ryan before they were both killed.

In court, it emerged that the fetish website account Ryan had been messaging on was maintained on Christine’s computer under the username Annastasia9.

However, there was ‘not one iota of evidence that she was into knife play, binding, BDSM,’ said prosecutor Eric Clingan.

Ryan and the account user discussed rough sex and bloodplay, an act where someone deliberately cuts another.

During the chats, Annastasia9 wrote that she cheats on her husband ‘whenever she wants to.’

In addition to aggravated murder charges, Banfield also faces child abuse and neglect charges because his four-year-old daughter, whom he shares with his deceased wife, was at home when the alleged murders occurred.

He also faces four charges of aggravated murder and firearm offenses.

In his opening statement, Banfield’s lawyer sought to undermine her testimony.

‘The whole reason she was arrested was to flip her against my client,’ John Carroll said.

He admitted the two were having an affair but insisted, ‘there’s an awful lot more to look for.’

Banfield’s trial continues. The Daily Mail contacted Carroll for comment.
