EXCLUSIVE: The Jennifer Lopez-Diego Luna-Tonatiuh feature musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, will be going wide on Oct. 10. Deadline first told you that the biggest movie at Sundance had its North American rights acquired by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and LD Entertainment.
Also opening on Oct. 10 is Disney’s Tron: Ares, Warner Bros/Legendary’s Animal Friends with Jason Momoa and Ryan Reynolds, and the exclusive launch of Amazon MGM Studios’ Luca Guadagnino thriller, After the Hunt, with Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri.
The Bill Condon directed, Artists Equity production is based on the book by Terrence McNally and John Kander and Fred Ebb’s songs from the Broadway show. Argentinian author Manuel Puig wrote the original 1976 novel which the 1985 Oscar winning movie starring William Hurt, Raul Julia and Sonia Braga is based upon. Luna and Tonatiuh play jail cellmates Valentín and Luis in a military-run 1983 Argentinian. Gay widow dresser, Luis, keeps Valentín’s spirits alive with tales about his favorite actress, Ingrid Luna (Lopez), and the movie musicals she starred in.
Roadside Attractions acquired Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl out of the Toronto International Film Festival last year and very quickly ramped up awards season buzz for its lead star Pamela Anderson with a Golden Globe Best Actress and SAG Female Lead Actress noms, and Supporting Actress nom for Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as BAFTA, Golden Globes and Critics Choice noms for the pic’s Miley Cyrus song “Beautiful That Way”.
Kiss of the Spider Woman is 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes coming away from its Sundance premiere
Deadline Film Critic Pete Hammond beamed in his review for the film, “Jennifer Lopez who has the whole package — singing, dancing, acting — she has never gotten the opportunity to show on screen in this way. Lopez has always been underrated for her chops as a dramatic actress, but fans of the period and the films emulated here will see favorable comparisons with Columbia musical icon Rita Hayworth, MGM diva Cyd Charisse, Ava Gardner, even Marilyn Monroe in the delicious ‘Gimme Love’ number (choreographed by Christopher Scott) where Aurora is surrounded by male dancers ala Marilyn in ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.‘”
