Kristi Noem explodes at CBS for naming ICE agent who shot Renee Good

During a recent interview, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem found herself in a heated exchange with a CBS journalist over the disclosure of an ICE officer’s identity. The officer was involved in a fatal shooting incident that claimed the life of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this month. Good, a mother of one, was allegedly non-compliant during an anti-ICE protest, leading to the tragic event.

Noem appeared on Margaret Brennan’s program to discuss the circumstances surrounding Good’s death. However, the conversation took a contentious turn when Brennan mentioned the officer, whose name had already been circulated in the media. The officer, Jonathan Ross, was identified as having been involved in the shooting on January 7, and Brennan noted that he had been injured and hospitalized in the incident.

Noem reacted sharply, interrupting Brennan to express her disapproval of naming the officer. “Well, don’t say his name!” Noem interjected. “I mean, for heaven’s sake, we shouldn’t have people continue to dox law enforcement when they have an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against them,” she asserted, highlighting the heightened risks faced by law enforcement officers in the current climate.

Brennan, maintaining her composure, calmly pointed out that the officer’s name was already available to the public, underscoring the balance between transparency and privacy in such sensitive cases. The exchange underscored the ongoing tension around issues of public safety, media responsibility, and the protection of law enforcement identities.

‘Well don’t say his name! I mean, for heaven’s sake, we shouldn’t have people continue to dox law enforcement when they have an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against them,’ Noem snapped at Brennan.

‘His name is public,’ the CBS reporter responded swiftly.

‘I know, but that doesn’t mean it should continue to be said,’ Noem said, adding that Ross was ‘attacked’ by Good’s car, and that he and his family have been suffering ever since.

‘People have attacked him and his family, and they are in jeopardy. And we have law enforcement officers every day who are getting death threats, and getting attacked at their hotels,’ Noem continued.

Brennan then tried to ask about Ross’s current ‘status’ as it was revealed last week that he suffered internal bleeding in his torso following the incident.

The extent of his condition remains unclear, as internal bleeding can also be classified as a bruise or contusion that causes mild or serious injury.

Noem continued to talk over her as Brennan said: ‘Well, of course no one condones violence against anyone as Noem quickly stated: ‘I can tell you that he’s healing,’ referring to Ross.

When asked if Noem could share how Ross is doing now, she refused to and instead replied: ‘We followed the exact same protocols that we always have for years, as to investigations into these situations.

‘But I’m not gonna talk about his medical records. I know that you know that it in itself is his prerogative to discuss his health,’ Noem added.

Brennan then asked if there would be an investigation into Ross following Good’s death, as it’s been reported that an investigation has been launched into her wife, Rebecca.

The investigation stems from accusations that Rebecca, who was with Good at the anti-ICE protest, impeded a federal agent in the moments before her wife was shot.

Brennan said: ‘I’m asking you about your policies. I asked you if you had put him on administrative leave. This is in question because the governor of Minnesota said the only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.

‘Is he correct that the federal agent is not being investigated in any way?’

Noem then replied: ‘We are following the exact same investigative and review process that we always have under ICE and under the Department of Homeland Security and within the administration.

‘The exact same policy that the Biden administration used.’

After appearing to give Brennan the run around, Noem said there is a probe into Ross’s actions that day.

‘So there is some review of his actions, is what I understand you saying there,’ Brennan said.

‘There always is. Every law enforcement officer knows that. When they take the oath to step up and to protect the public and put their lives on the line, they absolutely know that everything that they do will be analyzed and investigated,’ Noem responded.

Good suffered four gunshot wounds and bleeding from her ear following the deadly clash.

The 37-year-old mother-of-three was found unresponsive inside her car by paramedics. Blood was on her face and torso, according to a Minneapolis Fire Department report obtained by the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Good was discovered not breathing and her pulse was ‘inconsistent.’

First responders reported finding a total of four gunshot wounds: two in her chest, one on her left forearm, and one on the left side of the head.

Paramedics then lifted Good out of the car and brought her to the sidewalk in an attempt to revive her as protesters and law enforcement officers began to clash on the street.

At that point, they reported that Good was still not breathing and had no pulse.

Paramedics continued to provide lifesaving measures at the scene, in an ambulance and at a nearby hospital before CPR was finally discontinued at 10.30am.

In footage from the scene, an officer was seen approaching Good’s stopped SUV and grabbing the door handle as he allegedly demanded she open the door.

Her Honda Pilot then began to pull forward and Ross pulled his weapon, immediately firing three shots and jumping back as the vehicle moved toward him.

It is not clear from the videos if the vehicle made contact with Ross. After the shooting, the SUV slammed into two cars parked on a curb before crashing to a stop.

Prior to the shooting, Good is believed to have blocked the road with her SUV for four minutes before she was killed.

About 20 seconds after she pulled up to the street, a passenger – believed to be her wife Rebecca – exited the vehicle and eventually began filming.

There is now speculation that Rebecca, who admitted to bringing her spouse to the anti-ICE protest, exited the car so she could begin filming any potential clash with federal agents.

She was seen wielding her camera during Ross’s confrontation with her wife but it is unclear when she first started to record.

Witnesses have said Good and her wife, Rebecca, were acting as legal observers and filming the protest.

The newly reported probe into Good’s grieving wife will focus on Rebecca’s ties to activist groups and actions leading up to her wife’s death, according to NBC News.

The reported action against Good’s wife comes days after at least six federal prosecutors resigned in protest at being ordered to investigate Rebecca.

Good’s death has sparked an uproar in protests across the state and the country.

On Sunday morning it was reported that 1,500 troops are ‘on standby’ for a deployment to the state because of the demonstrations.
