Ms Ruston was also asked about the transgender controversy building over Katherine Deves, Liberal candidate for the Sydney seat of Warringah.
If you’re just getting up to speed on this, now deleted comments made by Ms Deves on social media have been unearthed, including her likening her lobbying to stop transgender athletes from competing in women’s sport to standing up against the Holocaust.
Ms Ruston said Ms Deves comments were “absolutely unacceptable” but she backed away from suggestions the Liberal candidate should be changed before the election.
“We are a broad church and people are entitled to their points of view,” she said.
“I think the most important thing is that the views that were expressed by Ms Deves are absolutely unacceptable and have been withdrawn.
“We don’t live in an echo chamber.
“We need to accept that people have differing views, but the views that were expressed by Ms Deves were clearly unacceptable.”
She said transgender athletes participating in women’s sport was a “very sensitive issue”.
“I don’t think it’s an issue we should shy away from talking about.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison is sticking by Ms Deves, despite calls from some in the party that she should go.
