The Australian government is being warned the “sovereign citizen” movement has become a clear and present threat to the nation’s security.
Long regarded as “mostly a nuisance” by authorities, “sovereign citizens” – a loose description for people who hold extreme anti-government views – require a stronger response, according to a study by the Lowy Institute think tank.

In recent years, the perception of “sovereign citizens” has shifted. Once seen as quirky individuals who might contest a parking ticket by arguing that authorities have no jurisdiction over them, they are now viewed through a different lens.

Researchers are sounding the alarm, stating that “significant action is necessary to curb the global proliferation of dangerous online content.”

One potential measure would be governments working with technology companies and international law enforcement agencies to counter the movement’s presence online.

One proposed solution is the establishment of a worldwide database to monitor sovereign citizen online influencers. Their ideology is disseminated through various digital channels, including websites, social media, online forums, and encrypted messaging apps.

Collaboration between governments and tech giants like Meta and Microsoft could be pivotal. By working with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, these networks might be reclassified as online terrorist groups.

Should this reclassification occur, it would allow technology companies to remove such accounts from their platforms and enhance surveillance efforts.
