A plane crash occurred near a home in Yulee on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a 56-year-old pilot and leaving a family stunned as their backyard fence caught fire.

YULEE, Fla. — A family in Yulee remains in disbelief after a small single-engine plane crashed right outside their home on Saturday morning, setting their backyard fence on fire.

The family told First Coast News their family is safe but feels heartbroken for the 56-year-old man who lost his life.

90-year-old Billy Cowart and his wife are struggling to comprehend the plane crashing only a short distance from their home that morning. He recalled hearing his wife’s cries for help.

“It’s kind of unreal that at my house, a plane had crashed and a pilot had lost his life,” said Cowart.

A report from the Florida Highway Patrol said that a Piper single-engine aircraft was flying near the Yulee Airport on Blackrock Road Saturday at 9:35 a.m.

A 56-year-old pilot from Yulee was killed when the plane crashed in a wooded area right near Cowart’s home. Cowart and his wife said that they are grateful that they are OK.

“And you know another 70 foot, bingo, God one of them miracles that’s all one of them miracles,” said Cowart.

Cowart said he and his wife are still in shock about what happened and are sending their thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family. Cowart said this tragic incident serves as a reminder to cherish every moment you spend with your loved ones.

“Just get the most out of every day, as you can,” said Cowart.

The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing to investigate this crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has videos is encouraged to contact FHP.
