Police are searching for two men – the driver and his accomplice – who struck two road workers in Carrum Downs at 7.15am yesterday.
Bayswater father Timmy Rakei, 44, and his colleague were setting up cones on the road near the corner of Hall Road and Lats Avenue when they were hit by a red Holden at high speed.
Speaking to 3AW this morning, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer said the surviving victim, a 38-year-old Traralgon man, was no longer in a critical condition.
“Unfortunately they are life-changing injuries though,” he said.
“He’s got severe leg injuries. He’s going to have an uphill battle in recovery.”
Senior Sergeant Dwyer said police “had a number of reports in” and “nominated a number of people” but investigators were yet to track down the wanted driver, who did not slow down “at all” while approaching the 40km/h roadwork zone.
“At the last second he appears to have made an attempt to veer to the left to avoid the collision but it was just far too late and he was travelling far too fast,” he said.
Police believe the driver is aged in his 30s and is of Caucasian appearance.
Security video shows the man getting of out his car, looking at the victim and then walking away, before getting into a second car with another driver.
Police said the man was picked up by another man driving a black Hyundai SUV, which was last seen heading eastbound on Ballerto Road at 7.45am.
Senior Sergeant Dwyer yesterday slammed the driver’s decision to flee as cowardly.
“It’s just a callous, cold act,” he said.
“It’s the act of a coward.”
Anybody who sees the men or the black Hyundai is urged to contact Triple Zero (000).
