GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Joseph Bryan Johnson, 46, was arrested early yesterday morning after Gainesville Police Department officers conducting a covert burglary detail saw him walking behind Munegin’s Bar on NW 13th Street at 4:30 a.m. with a 15-year-old girl and another person. The third person walked away quickly, but the man later identified as Johnson and the girl remained behind the business.
Officers searched the parking lot and heard thumping noises from the fenced-in area behind the business; they found that one of the two gates had been propped closed with bricks, and Johnson and the girl had entered the fenced-in area. When officers found Johnson, he was reportedly lying on his back with his pants down, with the girl nearby. When officers asked what he was doing, he reportedly said, “Having fun.” He also reportedly said he had permission to be on the property.
Officers also found a broken latch on a storage room in the fenced-in area, and the owner said the latch had not been broken previously, but he didn’t identify anything that was missing. The owner also reportedly said that Johnson did not have his permission to be in that area of the property.
Post Miranda, Johnson reportedly said that he thought the girl was 19 years old. He has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and lewd and lascivious behavior on a victim under 16 years of age. Johnson has three felony convictions and a pending misdemeanor case for possession of marijuana. He is being held on $30,000 bail plus $870 in child support.
