A man pretending he wanted a massage robbed a massage therapist Friday evening at a spa in San Diego’s Grantville neighborhood, police said.

It happened about 6 p.m. at Zhen Spa Massage on San Diego Mission Road near Rancho Mission Road, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said in a news release. The business is in the Rancho Mission Plaze shopping center, just across Interstate 15 from the under-construction Snapdragon Stadium.

The bandit walked into the business and asked for a massage, but after being led to a back room, he pulled out a gun and demanded money from the massage therapist, Heims said. The employee handed over cash and then ran out the front door.

Police arrived and searched for the man, but believe he fled out the back door, Heims said. The robber was described as a roughly 5-foot-5-inch Hispanic man in his 20s with brown eyes. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue face mask.

Detectives from the Police Department’s robbery unit were investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the heist or the robber’s identity was asked to call robbery detectives at (619) 531-2299, or San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
