In 2022, Nicholas Roske attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison on Friday.

Roske, who currently identifies as a transgender woman named Sophie, received a 97-month federal prison sentence from Judge Deborah Boardman, a judge appointed by President Biden, as stated in a press release from the Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs.

After Roske is released, he will face a “lifetime of supervised release.”

“The attempted assassination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was a disgraceful attack against our entire judicial system by an individual with serious mental issues,” Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed in a statement. “The Department of Justice plans to appeal this inadequate sentence, which fails to encompass the appalling details of the case.”

In September, reports revealed that documents acquired by the Daily Wire indicated Roske—born male, describes as a transgender woman, and suffered from severe mental health issues and suicidal tendencies.

According to the Daily Wire, a “source familiar with the legal proceedings in the case” stated that Roske allegedly used “female identities online before the attempted assassination.”

According to a press release from the Office of Public Affairs for the DOJ in April 2025, Roske plead guilty to attempting to kill Kavanaugh.

The press release detailed that as part of Roske’s guilty plea, he “admitted that on June 7, 2022, he flew from Los Angeles International Airport to Dulles International Airport carrying a firearm and ammunition in his checked luggage,” and subsequently traveled to Montgomery County, Maryland, “with the intent to kill” Kavanaugh.

– News Senior Editor-at-Large Joel Pollak reported in January that Roske “told law enforcement that he had been inspired by the leak of a draft opinion in the case that overturned Roe v. Wade.”
