Married At First Sight debuted its first ever same-sex wedding in a ground breaking second episode on Tuesday evening.

The reality show finally showcased its first gay couple in Matt, 39, and Daniel, 27, after six years of she show being on air.

The show sees singletons walk down the aisle with a total stranger – a risk which has historically ended in tears, infidelity, and chaotic screaming matches.

This year’s series was tipped to look a little different to previous ones, and had adopted the very successful Aussie format, which become a hit in the UK during lockdown.

Rather than legal marriages, the couples will make a lifelong commitment to one another at a glamorous ceremony, overseen by a wedding celebrant, that includes guests, bridal gowns, dancing, speeches and cake.

Fans were left delighted on viewing the episode, with one fan saying of the newlyweds: ‘I’m emotionally connected to Matt and Daniel on Married at first sight uk already’ [sic]

Another wrote: ‘Ngl, am totally in love with Matt & Dan on #MAFSUK. I really really hope they make it [heart eye emoji] Such a cute couple.’

Matt is a charity worker from West Yorkshire, and he was put with the grooms before the wedding night, and said to them all: ‘When I started to tell people, and kind of realised who I was, I kind of became the person that I am now. Like really strong and confident.’

Over with the girls, Dan, who works in sales and is from Northern Ireland, said of his experience: ‘It’s amazing to be one half of the first gay couple [on the show].

‘Gay marriage has only been legalised very recently in Northern Ireland which is absolutely shocking. And now that I can share my relationship with the world, I find that so important.’

Even though this marks a momentous occasion for the UK show, the 2020 series of Australia’s strand of the show will have their first lesbian couple.

Another penned: ‘#MAFSUK FINALLY taking notes from the #MAFSAustralia format!’

While others were less than pleased at the new sensationalisation of the reality TV format.

And another wrote: ‘I dunno about this series of #MAFSUK… I’m gonna give it a go, but it does feel like the participants are all actors selected from agencies.’

They continued: ‘It seems to lack even more realness than you standard “reality tv”. I dunno if I can commit to it’ [sic]

The new episode comes after contestant Amy Christophers has told viewers to expect dramatic scenes from upcoming episodes of the UK version of the series.

Speaking to The Sun on Tuesday, 34-year-old Amy said of her experience on the programme: ‘Married At First Sight makes Love Island look like Downton Abbey.’

Amy continued: ‘Expect explosive dinner parties, drunken commitment ceremonies with lots of tears and swapping spouses.

Producers have tasked MAFS Australia’s dating expert Mel Schilling and Celebs Go Dating’s Paul C Brunson with the role of matching up the couples.

Mel revealed that she thought the UK version of the show might prove tamer than the scandalous Aussie series but admitted she had been completely proven wrong by the contestants.

Mel told the brides on Monday’s episode: ‘You’re essentially going to go through a fast tracked relationship. Meeting, connecting, marrying, honeymooning, moving in together and all the stags of the relationship will be condensed. This is going to change your life.’
