Hornsby’s Mayor has doubled down on the council’s threat not to collect residents’ rubbish bins if they have anti-Scott Morrison stickers.

Liberal-led Hornsby Shire Council has clashed with residents of one house who have climate change messaging featuring the Federal Government on their bins.

The stickers show images of Prime Minister Scott Morrison holding a lump of call in parliament, along with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, with taglines like “chuck them out” and “bin him”.

Mayor Philip Ruddock, who is also the president of the NSW Liberal Party, has defended the controversial threat, claiming stickers of any form are not allowed on “public property”.

“Council’s position is very clear, public property is public property,” he said.

“We don’t expect people would be politicising our bus sheds, our lamp posts, and bins are owned by council and leant to people for purposes of receiving their waste.

“Council property should be used for the purpose of which it was acquired.

“If people want to be able to put up political signs they’re free to do so, they can get a stake and put it up in their front garden.”

Mr Ruddock also said it was not his decision to impose the threat but council officers made the call.

Residents in the area don’t find the stickers offensive rather they find them amusing.

“I think it’s so funny,” Caity Riley, a resident on the street, said.

“I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, don’t think it should be taken that seriously.

“It’s just a bin at the end of the day.”
