SISSONVILLE, W.Va. — A school lacrosse team from Medina safely escaped a bus fire on I-77 North in Sissonville, West Virginia, on Thursday night as they were traveling back home from the Carolinas.
Zach Bess, the Public Information Officer for the Sissonville Fire Department, tells 3News it was around 7 p.m. when crews were alerted to the bus fire. It happened near the Haines Branch Road exit around mile marker 116, which is in Kanawha County just north of Charleston.
He said the bus driver had reported hearing some noises from the engine compartment moments before the fire.
Bess added that the fire was well-involved at the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
He said all 18 team members, their coaches and the driver were able to get off the bus safely. Bess noted that they were then taken to the main fire station to get cleaned up, have some food and make contact with their families until another bus arrived for them to continue their drive home.
Bess also said that some bystanders stopped to help get everybody off the bus.
No injuries were reported.
Most of the team’s equipment and luggage was saved from the fire, according to Bess.
I-77 was closed for some time as crews from multiple agencies worked at the scene, with Bess adding that approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel had leaked from the bus.
We’ve reached out to Medina City Schools for more information about the situation. We will update this story once we receive their response.
