Although Mike White has been known to throw The White Lotus fans a curveball, it seems safe to assume the killer of Season 3 is human.
Michelle Monaghan, who plays actress Jaclyn Lemon on the HBO series, recently shot down a popular fan theory about who is responsible for the shooting spree teased in the opening scene of the season.
“You know, I’ve just got to debunk a theory out here. Guys, the monkeys did not do it!” Monaghan broke the news on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “People have gone ape s— thinking that.”
Her comment comes after the first episode of Season 3 opened with a flash-forward to Nicholas Duvernay‘s Zion hiding in the resort’s koi pond as gunshots go off and the local monkeys run wild, shortly before he comes across a body floating in the water.
When asked if her character ends up snapping while on her girls trip to Thailand, the actress teased, “Well, I don’t know. You’ll have to watch. Maybe I go a little bananas. Maybe.”

After her fan-favorite character Tanya McQuoid-Hunt met her heartbreaking fate in the Season 2 finale, Jennifer Coolidge previously told Deadline she’s “praying there’s some justice for Tanya” this season, during which the character’s shady widower Greg Hunt (Jon Gries) has returned, as well as her former friend and almost business partner Belinda Lindsey (Natasha Rothwell).
“You know, Greg was a creep. He needs to go down,” added Coolidge. “But I just think it continues to be really interesting, really dark and then we all have to talk about it afterwards. I think it’s a really good sign.”
Coolidge praised White for continuing to write some “really interesting stuff” for the anthology series, adding that “the characters this year are really good, and it’s got some really dark creepy stuff.”
New episodes of The White Lotus arrive Sunday nights on Max at 9pm ET/6pm PT, airing on HBO at 9pm ET/10pm PT.
