CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is progressing with its enhancement projects on Interstate 16 at Interstate 95, aiming for substantial completion with all lanes and bridges properly aligned by 2025.

The projects have been underway for years to enhance safety by reconstructing the interchange and widening I-16 to relieve traffic congestion.

Kyle Collins from GDOT mentioned that the primary upgrades are anticipated to finish shortly. The expanded segment of I-16 will feature three lanes in each direction between I-95 and I-16.

“To achieve this, we need to complete bridge construction in specific areas,” explained Collins. “Near the 516 interchange, work is currently ongoing. Our target is to have all new lanes and a brand-new bridge by the end of this quarter, around late September or early October.”

The agency recently implemented a new lane pattern on I-95, providing motorists with additional time and space for safer entry and exit at the interchange. After the main projects conclude, teams will address minor works, such as final paving and adding new safety features. Drivers should brace for continued traffic disruptions into next year.

“They’ll be doing corrective work finalizing ITS, maybe even some lighting in and around the interchange at 16,” Collins said.

Collins added, “Ramp meters are being installed at Dean Forest and Chatham Parkway as part of the project’s traffic management enhancements.”

While the projects have taken longer than anticipated, GDOT notes improvements in smoother commutes and foresees ongoing projects to accommodate growing traffic and future economic advancements.
