NBC host Sara Gore made an emotional announcement on Thursday, revealing she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The news came during a heartfelt on-air segment.
At 49, Gore informed her audience that she would be taking a break from her roles on Open House and New York Live to focus on her treatment. “I felt it was important to share this with you personally,” she stated during the broadcast of New York Live. “I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be stepping away for surgery and treatment.”
Gore candidly expressed her apprehension, acknowledging, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little scared.”
Despite anticipating the possibility of such a diagnosis due to her family history—both her mother and sister have faced breast cancer—Gore admitted the news still came as a surprise. “Being high-risk, I always thought this day might come. But let me tell you, you’re never truly prepared for it,” she shared, her voice filled with emotion.
Though Gore ‘assumed’ she would be getting the diagnosis one day, as both her mother and sister previously battled the illness, she admitted that it still caught her ‘off guard.’
‘I always knew I was high-risk. I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready,’ she said, as her voice began to crack.

‘You’re just never ready for some reason because, even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it is an emotional blow,’ she said through tears.
‘I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung,’ she added.
‘I know it’s going to sting for a minute. You know what? It’s stinging right now,’ she said.
‘But I also know that I am exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors, and people who are taking such good care of me at home, thank you.’
Gore then thanked her ‘family’ and said she feels ‘loved’ and ‘very supported’ by her co-workers.
Gore said she’s ‘choosing to believe’ that ‘maybe there is a gift in this.’
‘Even if I don’t fully understand what it is yet. I’m working on that part. If anything, it’s already a reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters,’ she said.
‘I’m going to take some time to rest and to heal,’ she went on.
