Pensioners over 75 urged to get new Covid jab as 'immunity wanes'

Older and at-risk individuals can now schedule their spring COVID-19 vaccinations, as health officials emphasize that immunity from past infections may diminish over time. Those eligible are encouraged to secure their appointments promptly.

Across England, tens of thousands of daily vaccination slots are now open at general practitioner offices and community pharmacies. The campaign targets people aged 75 and over, residents of elderly care homes, and those with compromised immune systems.

According to NHS England, eligible individuals will receive invitations to schedule their vaccinations, but they don’t have to wait to be contacted. Appointments can be booked through the NHS app, online, by visiting a walk-in site, or by calling 119. COVID-19 continues to pose a threat throughout the year, especially to elderly and vulnerable populations.

Caroline Temmink, NHS England’s director of vaccination, highlighted the importance of continued vigilance: “Even as we enjoy longer, warmer days, it’s important to remember that viruses like COVID-19 circulate year-round and remain a serious risk for those who are vulnerable.”

She added, “Immunity from previous infections can decrease over time, which is why we urge everyone eligible to get their vaccine as soon as possible. There’s no need to wait for an official invitation—simply visit the NHS website, use the NHS App, or call 119 to book your appointment.”
