NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon made his way to the Goulburn police academy, where he spoke to over 300 probationary constables on the brink of being sworn into the force. His message was one of pride and encouragement.

“We are the best police force in the world, and that’s because of you,” Lanyon declared. “While we’re at the top, we must continue striving for improvement and never become complacent.”

As these recruits prepared for their ceremonial march and graduation from the Goulburn academy set to take place tomorrow, Lanyon underscored the importance of their safety, emphasizing it as a primary concern.

Lanyon’s current five-year term began amid significant challenges, marked by a surge in gangland violence and shootings. His leadership is poised to guide these new officers as they embark on their careers in law enforcement.

Lanyon said that the safety of the recruits “is always a greatest concern”.

The commissioner’s five-year tenure began in a hail of bullets and gangland murders.

Lanyon’s most recent response saw 12 arrests across Sydney, targeting the Hells Angels bikie gang.

“We want to be very positive, if people want to commit crimes, we will investigate and put them before the courts,” he said.

He also acknowledged yesterday’s alleged domestic violence incident that saw a pregnant woman run over and nearly killed, describing it as “abhorrent”.

Tomorrow, 341 probationary constables are set to be sworn in.

It is the biggest class in 13 years, however, there are still 2000 vacancies that need to be filled.

The new officers will spread to all corners of the state, pledging to serve and protect the community.
