After two decades, the ensemble of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia remains dedicated to delighting fans, this time through a lineup of notable guest appearances.

With Season 17, this enduring and bold comedy featuring Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Kaitlin Olson explores new territories — including visits to Abbott Elementary and the Bachelor mansion, thanks to collaborations with two ABC shows — and unfolds epic storylines that will undoubtedly become part of Sunny lore.

During a chat with DECIDER at the Paley Center’s Season 17 event, the cast offered insights into what — and more importantly, who — audiences can anticipate in the upcoming weeks as the ten fresh episodes roll out through July and August.

“There’s a legendary actress that we’re very excited to have in the show,” Day teased on the carpet, carefully tiptoeing around any spoilers or identifying information. “Couldn’t be more excited.”

While mum’s the word on the cameo front, Day said that there is so much to look forward to in Season 17 that he can talk about, including the season’s many crossover episodes and the non-crossovers that hold a special place in his heart, as well.

“I love this whole season, but you know we have one episode that has to do with Mac and Dennis becoming EMTs,” Day told DECIDER, referencing the July 16 installment. “Even though I’m excited for Golden Bachelor and excited for Abbott Elementary, I’m really excited for that EMT episode.”

After more than 160 episodes of television and 20 years with the fans, it’s hard for the actors to pull out single moments or gags that really speak to them or sum up their experience. After all, Day, Howerton, and Mac — who serve as co-executive producers and co-developers — started the show in their twenties and have all married and welcomed families (with Sunny co-stars, nonetheless) in the two decades since.

For Howerton, there isn’t one specific moment that can do 20 years of memories justice, as it’s hard to sum up 17 seasons of episodes and hundreds of experiences — including major celeb cameos, wild storylines, and jokes that could have gotten them canceled in another light. That said, there are episodes that feel to the Blackberry star like a decent representation of the show as a whole.

“I’m a big fan of ‘Frank’s Little Beauties,’ the beauty pageant episode that we did. Big fan of ‘The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award,’” Howerton shared. “I think those episodes encapsulate really well what our show has become and what our show can be at its best.”

And speaking of Frank, DeVito — who joined the show in its second season, playing the father of Dee and Dennis — said that when it comes to the bit or the joke that fans mention most to him, it’s a buffet of incredible options for his character. There is one particular moment that gets meme-d and mentioned more than the others, however.

“Rum ham,” the Matilda star said, referencing the cut of meat from Season 7 Episode 2, “The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore,” when Mac and Frank get stuck out at sea and become attached to the ham a la Wilson (aka the volleyball) in Cast Away.

DeVito added, “I mean, I think rum ham is the iconic, has gone through very many iterations of the zeitgeist of the public. A lot of kids talk about me coming out of the couch naked. I like a lot of the crazy stuff that Frank does. But I think rum ham was the one.”
