Two strangers banded together to save a dog stuck in a weed-infested lake in the most Australian way possible – by using an inflatable thong and crocodile.

Daniel Jipp and Chris Julian jumped to the rescue after the border collie, named Jaxon, became trapped in a lake at Palmerston, in the Northern Territory.

The dog had been spooked by a storm before he fled his owner’s home and jumped into the lake sitting behind Mr Julian’s house.

Mr Julian ran into the water but was unable to reach the dog because the weeds were too thick.

His partner Laura retrieved a blow-up crocodile and thong from the house.

‘My husband tried to get into the lake by a few different angles,’ Mrs Julian told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The weeds were that thick and deep. The dog was just in the middle and couldn’t get anywhere.’

Mr Jipp was nearby and watching the incident unfold before he jumped in to help with the rescue.

‘I told my kids to go back into the house,’ Mrs Julian said. ‘They are seven and nine. I honestly thought the dog was going to sink.’

Mr Julian and Mr Jipp armed themselves with the inflatables before paddling out to the trapped dog.

Mrs Julian filmed her husband and Mr Jipp slowly wade through the weeds.

Mr Julian manages to reach the dog and hands him to Mr Jipp.

He then trudges out of the lake carrying Jaxon over his shoulder before gently resting him on the grass.

‘Lucky dog,’ Mrs Julian says off-camera.

Owner Leya Cowley said she had kept her dog in the house during the storm, but he still managed to escape somehow.

‘I was surprised when they called because that meant he broke out of our house,’ she told NT News.

‘It looks like he busted the glass sliding door open – I would have thought being locked inside the house he would be safe, but obviously not.’

City of Palmerston chief executive Luccio Cercarelli said council was managing the growth of the weed in the lake.

‘Managing the ecology of these lakes with such an invasive weed is tremendously difficult, but the Council is committed to reducing the spread through its intensive management program,’ he said.

The lake has since been cleared with turtles, ducks and other wildlife returning to the water.
