SAN DIEGO —
Authorities have identified the pickup driver killed in an early Sunday morning crash near the ramp that connects Interstate 805 with state Route 94 near the Fairmount Park and Mount Hope neighborhoods.
The driver was Jesse Armando Sosa, 26, of Chula Vista, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sosa was driving a 2021 Toyota Tacoma north on the freeway shortly after midnight when the truck crossed onto the grass median at the state Route 94 onramp, hit a metal guardrail and then a concrete bridge pillar, authorities said. He had been driving the truck at a “high rate of speed.”
Sosa became trapped in the wreckage and died from blunt force head trauma, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighters used rescue tools to cut apart the Tacoma and recover the body.
As the firefighters and CHP investigators were working at the crash site, someone passing by in a white pickup on southbound I-805 fired shots. No one appeared to be hit by the gunfire.
Officers found a bullet casing from a handgun at the scene.
The white pickup was last seen heading east on Market Street, an officer said.
