On October 13, 2011, Raj Rajaratnam, a hedge fund billionaire at the heart of one of the largest insider trading scandals in American history, was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a federal judge in New York. He was released early, in 2019.

In 2010, after being trapped 2,300 feet (700 meters) underground due to a mine collapse in Chile, 33 miners were rescued. They were lifted to safety in capsules, 69 days after the accident.
In 2016, Bob Dylan was named winner of the Nobel prize in literature.
In 2021, William Shatner, known for his role as Captain Kirk, ventured into space at the age of 90. He and three other passengers experienced a brief voyage, reaching 66.5 miles (107 kilometers) into space aboard a craft from Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company, completing the journey in just over 10 minutes.
