One person has been killed and another is critically injured after an alleged hit-and-run in Carrum Downs, Melbourne.

A red Holden struck a group of workers near the corner of Hall Road and Lats Avenue at 7.15am today.

One person, who is yet to be formally identified, suffered fatal injuries, while a second was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver – believed to be of Caucasian appearance and aged in his 30s – abandoned the car and victims before getting into a black Hyundai SUV.

It was last seen heading eastbound on Ballerto Road at 7.45am.

Police, including the Air Wing, are currently searching for him.

Initially it was believed two cars had been involved in a crash just after 7am, closing off Hall Road.

Police have urged anybody who witnessed the accident, or who might have dashcam footage, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anybody who sees the black Hyundai is urged to contact Triple Zero.
