BALBOA PARK —
A man was shot and wounded Tuesday night near the boundary between Balboa Park and Hillcrest, prompting a search for the gunman in a densely vegetated area near state Route 163, San Diego police said.
The shooting was reported at 10 p.m. near Upas Street and Seventh Avenue, near the far northwest corner of Balboa Park along its boundary with the Hillcrest neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.
A 911 caller reported that someone was shot and officers arrived to find a man with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Buttle said. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital for treatment, though the severity of his injury was not immediately known.
Officers set up a perimeter to search for the suspected gunman, who was believed to be a man in his early 30s, Buttle said. The perimeter included officers stopping and blocking some traffic on south SR-163, a portion of which runs just east of and below the shooting scene.
A San Diego police helicopter crew was helping search for the gunman from the sky. As of 10:30 p.m. officers were still searching for the suspected shooter.
