This Oscar-nominated actor looked unrecognizable as he made a rare outing in Manhattan recently – 41 years after his most famed starring role.

The star, now 71, played an iconic composer in the famed 1984 biopic, which won a Golden Globe Award in 1985.

He is also the proud recipient of an Emmy Award and a Tony Award.

The actor largely retired from acting in the mid-1990s to focus on a new passion – stage directing and writing.

He returned to acting in 2023 by reprising one of his legendary roles.

It’s Tom Hulce! The actor is best known for playing composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1984 biopic, Amadeus.

He gained critical acclaim for his performance in the movie, sharing the screen with Simon Callow, F. Murray Abraham, and Elizabeth Berridge, which earned him nominations for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

He is also known for his role in 1986 comedy-drama film, Echo Park, in which he starred alongside Susan Dey.

Hulce’s other screen credits include 1980’s Those Lips, Those Eyes, 1978’s National Lampoon’s Animal House and 1989’s Parenthood with Steve Martin. 

He won an Emmy Award for his role as Peter Patrone in 1995’s The Heidi Chronicles.

Hulce voiced Quasimodo in Disney’s animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996. 

The actor also secured a Tony Award in 2007 for Best Musical as the lead producer of Spring Awakening and has received several nominations for his roles in various productions, including A Few Good Men and Hamlet.

In 2008 Hulce publicly came out as gay in an interview with Seattle Gay News.

In 2018, he revealed his decision to step away from acting in an interview with PageSix, stating, ‘Something changed, and I never want to act again. Loved it but no longer. I haven’t acted in 15 years. My awards are in a trunk here, shelf there.’

He also hit back at a wild online rumor that he had married a woman and welcomed a daughter with her.

He said: ‘That information – having a wife and child – is false. In the world of the internet, there are many falsehoods. 

‘Anyone can write things on Wikipedia, and they don’t have to be true. I’m comfortable being listed [among openly gay actors] even though I stopped acting about a decade ago.’

‘Directing’s what I did for 20 years. And actors can’t have vision. Now vision’s exciting. 

‘I’m responsible for choosing the project, putting pieces together, picking director, screenwriter, cast, designers, investment partners, and daily creatively fighting huge obstacles that aren’t solved with money.’
