A 39-year-old man, waiting to cross a Costa Mesa street, was killed by a pickup truck driven by a man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs Tuesday night, Jan. 4, authorities said.

Witnesses told police the victim was standing on the sidewalk and pushing the button to cross, near Victoria Street and Placentia Avenue, about 11:25 p.m. when the driver hit him, said Roxi Fyad, Costa Mesa’s police spokeswoman.

The crash knocked over a pole holding a traffic signal, with the truck catching fire and the driver getting out of the vehicle by the time officers arrived, Fyad said.

Jon Weir, 65, of Garden Grove was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Fyad said.

It was unclear if Weir lost control of his pickup truck or veered off of the roadway as he traveled east on Victoria.

The victim had not been publicly identified by police, pending notification of his relatives.
