Penny Wong's huge call on Aussie troops in Iran

Amid the bustling anticipation of the Easter long weekend, a significant fuel shortage is affecting hundreds of service stations across Australia, leaving many travelers concerned. While this situation has sparked anxiety, a glimmer of hope arrives in the form of a fuel price reduction.

Across the nation, out of over 8,000 service stations, about 653—or approximately eight percent—are currently lacking one or more types of fuel. This shortage poses a challenge for holidaymakers planning road trips during this busy period.

In an effort to alleviate some of this stress, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a temporary relief measure. Australians will benefit from an additional 5.7 cents per liter off fuel prices until June 30, following a collaborative agreement between federal and state governments to waive some GST revenue.

This fuel price cut builds upon an earlier reduction in the fuel excise, which slashed wholesale petrol and diesel costs by roughly 26 cents per liter. Though these measures are aimed at providing financial relief, the tourism industry continues to face hurdles, particularly with travelers worried about both the price and availability of fuel at their destinations.

Peter Clay, the Caravan Industry Association’s general manager of research and insights, noted that caravan parks situated several hours from major cities are feeling the pinch. A noticeable decline in bookings has been reported, as potential visitors weigh the cost and feasibility of their travel plans.

Caravan parks more than a few hours away from the city were suffering the most from a decline in bookings, Caravan Industry Association general manager of research and insights Peter Clay told AAP.

‘(Travellers are asking) is there fuel available? Is there diesel available where I’m going?” he said.

The cancellation rate for Easter normally sits at about 30 per cent, he said, and that had ticked up this year because of the fuel crisis.

Hotels have also taken a hit as Australians and foreigners cut back on travel, facing a decline in bookings of up to 10 per cent across the east coast capital cities compared to the same time in 2025, Accommodation Australia boss James Goodwin said.

‘If you can afford it, if you are in a position to be able to travel, then don’t put off that travel,” he told AAP.

‘Just make sure that you’re looking around, that you’re going to a place where you know that you can get the fuel, or make sure you fill up before you leave.’
