BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Two people from Alabama died in a wreck in Florida over the Fourth of July weekend, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.
Jackson Cunningham, 20, of Hoover, tragically lost his life while crossing the road in Perdido Key on Saturday. According to NorthEscambia.com, the incident occurred at 3 a.m. and involved a driver of an unmarked vehicle from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department.
“We can confirm the vehicle involved was an unmarked Escambia County Patrol Car with the law enforcement officer returning home from an off-duty job,” the FHP stated. “The employee of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was not actively patrolling nor on duty at the time.”
The initial statement did not disclose Cunningham’s name, nor the identity of the 20-year-old woman from Calera who also lost her life, but UA’s Theta Chi chapter confirmed his passing on Monday.
“He was a man of unwavering character, faith, and kindness, and his impact on the lives of others will last forever,” the fraternity posted on its Instagram page. “His laughter and smile was felt in every corner of the room he was in, and his absence leaves a hole in our brotherhood that words can’t fully express. Until we meet again brother.”
The case remains under investigation.
